Looking to get a stronger play in fleet telematics and the exploding market for machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity, Verizon announced it is purchasing M2M expert Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI) for U.S.$12 per share in cash for a total of U.S.$612 million.
HTI offers a portfolio of services, ranging from commercial fleet telematics, infotainment offerings and even products and services for mHealth providers and users. Verizon said it is looking to leverage HTI as it looks to offer platform-based M2M solutions tailored to various verticals. The purchase is expected to close in the third quarter, subject to regulatory and other closing conditions.
Yankee Group Research VP Brian Partridge comments
“This acquisition of HTI by Verizon brings it to a new level as a global M2M platform provider.  It's clearly putting its money where its mouth is, betting on M2M as a new growth engine.  This transaction brings Verizon instant credibility in the automotive telematics and infotainment segments—two of the fastest growing M2M categories Yankee Group tracks.  The people Verizon obtains from this transaction are even more valuable than the technology platform because they bring specific vertical expertise that would take Verizon years to develop organically.”
