AT&T Halves the Price of Nokia’s Flagship Lumia 900 Phone

Daily Insight | Carl Howe | July 16, 2012

AT&T is cutting the price of the Nokia Lumia 900 to just U.S.$50, down from U.S.$100, in the hopes that customers will continue to buy the device, despite the fact that it’s considered a dead-end technology-wise and will be unable to upgrade to Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 OS.

PC World reports Lumia 900 buyers will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7.8, which will provide them with the new Start Screen that lets users display and resize app tiles across the screen. But it will remain disappointing, especially since the 900 won’t support Windows 8, which offers a variety of new features, including a new Web browser, removable SD card storage and an NFC-based digital wallet hub.

Yankee Group Research VP Carl Howe comments

“With Microsoft’s announcement of Windows Phone 8 in June, it positioned that OS as the one consumers should look for if they are shopping for a Windows Phone. Our research shows the Nokia Lumia 900 has struggled to win over consumers, and unfortunately, that phone and the Lumia 800 won’t be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8. With those devices now on a dead-end path on Microsoft’s Windows Phone road map, AT&T had to lower its price to maintain consumer demand.”
