T-Mobile USA Names John Legere New CEO
Daily Insight | Rich Karpinski | September 20, 2012
Three months after Phillip Humm resigned from his position as CEO of T-Mobile USA, the operator has announced its new CEO: former chief executive of Global Crossing John Legere.
Legere will start on Sept. 22 and will take the reigns from interim CEO Jim Alling, who will return to his position as COO of the company according to the Seattle Times. Legere spent much of his career working at AT&T, including working as president of its Asian operations and outsourcing business. Rene Obermann, chief executive of Deutsche Telekom, said in a statement that he believes Legere possesses the right skillset to “lead the business into the future.”
Yankee Group Senior Analyst Rich Karpinski comments
“There was some call—including here—for T-Mobile to think well outside the box in picking a new CEO, bringing in a true outsider who would focus on changing the rules of the wireless game (something necessary when you are the market’s fourth player, as T-Mobile is today). The choice of Legere is not that. As former CEO of Global Crossing, Legere is very much a traditional telecom exec. That said, Legere and his Deutsche Telekom peers are saying all the right things about taking the operator’s ‘challenger’ strategy to the next level. If T-Mobile’s recent moves—including launching an unlimited data plan and planning a SIM card offering targeting the iPhone 5 (even before it can offer that device itself)—are evidence, Legere and team could make progress in recapturing the subs it has bled since its merger with AT&T fell apart. Failing that, Legere will no doubt have the T-Mobile ship in strong operational shape to explore a variety of M&A alternatives that may be necessary to compete with larger rivals.”
