Microsoft recently unveiled the third iteration of its enterprise-focused tablet the Surface Pro, and the new device features a screen that is 38 percent larger than its predecessor as the company hopes to position the device to closely compete with laptops.

According to the BBC, Microsoft is even making moves to position the 12-inch device as an enterprise-grade PC rather than a tablet. In describing the thickness of the Surface Pro 3, Microsoft said that its 9.1 millimeters makes it the “thinnest PC” to feature an Intel quad-core processor. And when announcing the device, new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the Surface Pro 3 is part of the company’s goal “to create new categories and spark new demand for our entire ecosystem.” With this device it’s clear Microsoft is going after enterprise users who require the portability of a tablet but the functionality of a laptop PC.

Yankee Group Senior Analyst Boris Metodiev comments

“This announcement is interesting not only with what Microsoft launched, but also with what it didn’t launch. There were rumors that the company would also launch a 7-inch Windows RT-based tablet aimed at consumer users. The fact that the smaller tablet never saw the light of day means Microsoft has finally admitted that Windows RT is a failure, and it has probably given up on the operating system completely. Also, with the Surface line of devices, Microsoft will focus primarily on the enterprise sector, and it will leave the consumers to Nokia devices. Nokia already entered the tablet market with the Lumia 2520 and it is very likely to expand the range of tablets, albeit with some kind of tablet-adapted Windows Phone OS and not Windows RT. Such devices will not compete directly with Surface Pro 3, which already sits more in the laptop category.”
