In direct contrast to the fragmentation that has plagued the Android platform, Apple recently revealed that after just three months of availability iOS 7—the latest version of the OS—is run on 74 percent of iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices.

Apple made the announcement on its developer Web site, according to CNET. The company made iOS 7 available to device owners in September and last reported in October that it was running on two-thirds of devices. Already iOS 7 had been adopted quicker than any other Apple platform. The company also reported that iOS 6 is currently running on 22 percent of devices, while just 4 percent are running an earlier version of the platform. Although iOS 7 cannot run on devices released prior to the iPhone 4, it most likely got a boost from the fall releases of the iPhone 5C and 5S, as well as the iPad Air.

Yankee Group Senior Analyst Boris Metodiev comments

“Those are some impressive numbers of speedy OS adoption by Apple. In comparison, the latest version of Android, KitKat 4.4, runs on only 1.1 percent of all Android devices (mind you, it was released just more than a month ago), all versions of Jelly Bean amount to 54.5 percent and even the three-year-old Gingerbread can still be found on about a quarter of the Android devices. Obviously, quick adoption is much easier to achieve considering that iOS 7 runs on only several devices, all manufactured by the same company, compared to the hundreds of Android devices by numerous different vendors.

Despite the fact that iOS 7 was released only three months ago, Apple is already prepping the next version of the operating system. Only in beta for now, iOS 7.1 will address some of the criticism that iOS 7 faced regarding its colors, appearance and design.”
