Mobility giants Apple and Samsung agreed to drop their patent court battles in eight international markets, signaling that the ongoing fight between the two sides could be cooling. However, they will continue to face off in US courts.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the two companies made their announcement in a joint statement, but were quick to note that their patent battle in the US will rage on. "This agreement does not involve any licensing arrangements, and the companies are continuing to pursue the existing cases in US courts,” the statement reads. Apple first sued Samsung in 2011, saying the Korean OEM copied Apple tech in its smartphones. Most recently, Apple was awarded US$119m by a San Jose, California, court – far short of the $2.2bn it was seeking.

“Even though this agreement doesn’t stop any new lawsuits from emerging in the future in those eight countries, and the existing cases in the US are the most important ones, this is still an indicator that both companies are finally coming to their senses. Apple has more often been the aggressor and Samsung has been on the defensive end, but I think that the American company was very discouraged when it was awarded only a fraction of what it asked in the recent trial. Apple never managed to achieve what it aimed for, a sales ban of Samsung’s infringing devices, not to mention that it still hasn’t been paid by the South Korean company.

As I have mentioned before, the battle between the two smartphone makers was stuck in a stalemate and the sooner they agree on some kind of patent licensing deal, the better it will be for both companies. I believe that moment is coming and the particulars of such deal depend on the outcome of the ongoing US cases.”
